Functionalism (sociology) - In the social sciences, specifically sociology and sociocultural anthropology, functionalism, also called functional analysis, is a sociological philosophy that originally attempted to explain social institutions as collective means to fill individual biological needs. Later, it came to focus on the ways in which social institutions fill social needs, especially social stability.
Structural functionalism - Structural functionalism is a range of theoretical perspectives within anthropology and sociology that addresses the relationship of social activity to an overall social system. Structural functionalism emphasizes the aspects of social institutions and behavior that are conducive to stability and order within society.
Contemporary sociological theory - Our contemporary theorists are standing on the shoulders of the giants of sociology, but they are in turn expanding the horizons of our discipline at the macrostructural, microinteractional and interpretive levels of analysis. There are five major perspectives of contemporary sociology: functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology and theories of rational choice.
